HOT WALK AROUND THE LAKE

This was one hot walk, not in regards to our speed but in reference to the temperature. Even though we began our walk just past eight o’clock in the morning, the average temperature was 84F with full sun and high humidity.

Our overall pace was exactly what I was aiming for. Far from our top walking speed, but not too fast that it would stress out an already damaged knee. The good news is, I have no discomfort whatsoever in the knee. But 3 ½ miles is far from 13.1 miles, so we will see how it goes from now until January’s Disney World running events.

BAD DAY AT BLACK ROCK

This morning’s bike ride was a mixed bag, from me safely riding around the mall’s parking lot to watching one of our own being transported to the county hospital for observation.

Everything this morning started out the way it usually does on these weekday bike rides, with me slowly cruising around the mall’s parking lot patiently waiting for my cycling comrades to gather at our meet-up place on the east side of the large shopping mall.

There wasn't much route diversion when cycling to the coffee shop other than five out of eight of us, me included, taking the longer route via Griffin Road and then crossing I-75 via the Post Road Bridge. We then traveled northward on Weston Road towards the coffee/bagel shop.

Oh, I set a new PR on my Strava Post Road Bridge segment. Whoopee!

After our coffee break, and on the way back to our original meet-up place, the same five of us took an entirely different route than the other three bikers. We took the longer northern route and they took the same route as they took when riding to the coffee shop. How boring is that!?

While riding back to the meet-up place, instead of crossing I-75 by way of St. Rd. 84, which is close to being suicidal for walkers and bikers, all five of us took the safer route through Markham County Park. The park has a wide concrete trail that runs all the way from Weston Road to Flamingo Road and beyond.  Flamingo Road is where we would ordinarily turn southward anyway. The park’s concrete trail bypasses all road construction and all morning traffic heading into Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Anyway, we hadn't been on this relatively-new park trail for one minute when suddenly Sandy and Ron somehow became tangled up with one another, resulting in both of them hitting the road fairly hard at roughly 16 mph.

Other than a sore hip and a scraped elbow, Sandy is okay. Unfortunately, though, it was necessary for Ron to the transported to the county hospital via a county ambulance.

When Ron couldn't tell the paramedic what day of the week it was, or why he was lying on the concrete pathway, the fire rescue folks determined that it was absolutely necessary to take him to the hospital. We agreed!

As soon as I find out Ron’s condition, I’ll re-post.

Just received a hospital report.  Ron is okay!  Great news!!!!!

WALKING, LIFTING, TALKING AND BEING GRATEFUL

In between cycling days, I attempt to walk and do weight bearing exercises.  The weight bearing exercises usually take place in the middle of our walk.  Today was no exception!

Not wanting to stress out an already damaged left knee, my wife and I only casually walked to and from the gym, did our normal weight-machine routine while in the gym, and then walked back home.

While walking along the lake, we discussed how blessed we are to be healthy enough to do what we do. Realizing that there are literally millions of people that would do nearly anything to trade their lives with ours, we remain humbly grateful for everything in our lives, including our freedoms.

I hope everyone’s day is as joyful as ours…

THREE RIDES, ONE FLAT TIRE

This morning’s bike ride was three rides in one, a 3.4-mile escort ride (riding alongside my wife while she ran) at an average pace of 5.7 mph, a 12-mile ride to the coffee shop at an average speed of 13.3 mph, and a 16-mile ride from the coffee shop to home at an average speed of 16.2.

Can you guess which ride I enjoyed the most?

While riding from the coffee shop to home, which would be the third ride and the fastest ride, I hit a large rock that was in the middle of the bike lane. Being biker number four in a five-man pace line, I could not see the rock. I wish I had, because my front tire (new Continental Gatorskins) flattened almost immediately. We figured out that it was a pinch-flat.

Fortunately, there was an experienced rider behind me, Sandy S., so I felt comfortable yelling back to him that I had a flat, and that I was coming to a stop. At the time, we were traveling somewhere between 18-20 mph on a main thoroughfare with a high volume of traffic.

Because of safety concerns, I could not take my hands off of my handle bar to give a hand signal.  All I could do was to yell back to Sandy that I was slowing and then stopping. As it was, with the front tire being 100% flat, it felt like I had very little control of the steering.

Five minutes later, we were back in the lane again ready to cross one of the most dangerous intersections/bridges in South Broward County – Griffin Road and Interstate 75. With a deceleration-ramp and an on-ramp adjacent to the bike lane, you have to know that it took nerves of steel and a great deal of alertness to make it across that bridge in one piece.

Who led us across that bridge, anyway?

Anyhow, if you selected the first ride as my favorite, the one where I was riding alongside my wife while she ran, you guessed correctly. Sorry, no prize!

Have a happy Wednesday!

GYM AND ANOTHER WALK

After slowly walking to the gym, I spent 30 minutes pulling and pushing on upper and lower body resistance machines – two sets on each.

I then left the gym, slowly walking through the hospital’s parking area and along the lake. Several Ibis’ were feeding along the path that runs from the gym to the sidewalk.

My reward for a fine day of exercising is a strawberry smoothie made with fresh strawberries, almonds, ice cubes, tofu, soy-based yogurt, almond milk and a smidge of strawberry syrup.

It’s now time to play on the computer…

MORNING SPEED WALKING

No cycling today, so my wife and I went out for some speed-walk training.

Our chosen route took us around the shopping mall and medical buildings on sidewalks that are not exactly conducive for race-walking or running. Many of the concrete squares are raised above the adjacent square, causing one to be on the lookout for areas that would trip up even a nocturnal possum in search of food.

Walt Disney World requires all runners and walkers to maintain at least a 16:00 minute-per-mile pace during all of their running/walking events. This morning’s pace, without pushing the envelope, was a conservative 15:23 minute-per-mile pace. I’m well pleased with those results!

I’m also well pleased that my left knee felt solid and strong. Perhaps I can do something other than be a spectator during January 2013’s marathon weekend in Disney World.

DON’T B.S. ME RIDE

Not confident that anyone would show up for today’s group bike ride, mainly because of the weather radar, I slowly cruised around the shopping mall for nearly five-miles hoping that today wasn’t going to be a solo ride. Eight O’clock in the morning on a weekday is no time to be biking alone amongst the hurried motorists.

To my delight, two stalwarts did show up, tall Rey and not-as-tall Ron.

Big Rey is the cyclist that I like to ride behind. At 6’ 7”, he is perfect to draft behind. With me being only 5’ 7”, he gets very little draft off of me. Advantage: me!

This morning’s ride was a fun ride. We were not in a hurry, we relished riding when the cloud coverage kept the sun off our bodies, the average temp was a comfortable 80F, and we didn’t have to scramble for an outdoor table at the coffee shop.

We enjoyed our brief coffee-shop break up until some phony jackal decided to pull up a chair and then sit at our table – while carrying a large political sign printed with bold letters with a lime-green background.

He’s for the “other” guy!

After about one minute of his exaggerated bull-crap, I suddenly felt the need to empty my bladder, put on my helmet, saddle up and then ride away. Come to think about it, that’s exactly what I/we did.

As we rode away on our bikes, I could still hear him babbling away.

ADVANCED PACE BIKE RIDE

After riding alongside my wife for nearly four-miles while she ran, the real fun began when I left the barn with Ron and Doug on our speedy road bikes. Real fun as in, real fast!

Not two miles into our smallish group ride, Rossana hooked up with us at Hiatus Road and Sheridan Street. And then two blocks later, some guy from the Weston Flyers joined our group of four, making it now a group of five. There is strength in numbers, or more to the point, we had become more visible to the general motoring public. That’s a good thing!

Leading us westward on Stirling Road was Rossana and the Flyer gentleman, often pulling our pace line slightly over 20 mph into the WSW wind. So far I had no problem keeping up with the fast-moving group.

We then crossed over I-75 via the Stirling Road Bridge, turned north of 166th Avenue, and then westward again, but this time on busy Griffin Road. Griffin Road runs along a gator infested canal that leads out into the Florida Everglades. No gators were sighted today, only a dead possum lying in the middle of our bike lane.

After cruising through Weston, we then headed east on St. Rd. 84 at speeds up to 25 mph. That’s when my heart rate hit its max at 156 bpm. That’s when I let three of them go ahead for the next mile or so until we regrouped at a traffic signal.

We finally arrived at the coffee shoppe for a much needed breather. No coffee today, just peanut-crackers and H2O. Amongst other interesting topics, we talked about healthy diets and dietary life styles. Thankfully, no one brought up the topic that’s been haunting our American populace for weeks, national politics.

We then took our beloved Bonaventure route back to the barn at a slightly slower pace. You couldn’t tell that we rode slower based on my heart rate, but that was because the heat index had increased 10 to 15 degrees since the beginning of our ride.

Average group pace was 16.7 mph.

Oh, for the first time ever, I mounted my Contour Roam Video camera on my handle bars instead of on top my bike helmet. Later today I’ll upload and edit this morning’s ride for all of you to view.

Nice ride with good people, and the average temp was only 83 degrees. I’ll take it!

OOPS, NO HOUSE KEY

What started out to be a 3-mile walk around the shopping mall’s block ended up being a 7-mile walk to my wife’s work place.

And why is this?

Two miles into my neighborhood walk, and fifteen minutes after my wife left our home for work, I discovered that I failed to put a house key in the rear pocket of my Race Ready running shorts.

The lack of a key meant this: I had to walk an extra 4 miles to my wife’s work place, retrieve the car and house keys from her, and then drive her car back home. It also means that I’ll be picking her up from work when she clocks out, which I love doing anyway.

The silver lining to this story is that my left knee held up wonderfully. And my walking pace, even though I wasn’t pushing the pace whatsoever, was fast enough to get my body through most half marathons without being picked up by the DNF bus.

Fortunately, I smattered sunscreen all over my exposed skin prior to the leaving the house, because it sure was bright sunshine during my two hour sidewalk trip. The temperature was right around 84F with a nice breeze from the southeast, so the walk wasn’t excruciating weather-wise.

But I had no water, which means that I must have the DNA of a camel.

AWOL CYCLISTS

After circling the shopping mall at a snail’s-pace for around 25 minutes, all the while keeping my eyes on the incoming grey clouds, I met up with Rey on the east side of the mall for a ride to the coffee shoppe and back. Rey and I were the only cyclists that showed up for our scheduled Monday morning group ride.

With an average temperature of 78F, plus the greyish clouds keeping the sun off our skin, it turned out to be a perfect weather day for biking or anything else outdoors. The east wind was somewhat pesky on the way back to the mall, but even that wasn’t too bad considering the windy, wet forecast.

POWER WALKING

This training walk to and from the fitness center was simply “Ducky,” even though it was done in heat that would melt steal.

My wife swore that we were walking faster than a 15:46 overall pace, so next time we speed-walk we plan on using three different Garmin devices – a Forerunner 205, a Forerunner 305, and the Forerunner 110 that we used today. What the heck, I may even throw my Garmin Edge 500 into one of the back pockets of my Race Ready running shorts.

Accurate timing to me is critical because I have future plans that necessitate walking under a 16 minute-per-mile pace.

It’s my goal and I’m sticking to it!

ESCORT RIDE

After leaving our happy abode one hour prior to this morning’s sunrise, I rode alongside my remarkable wife while she did one of her “Goofy Challenge” training run/walks. The majority of her run/walk training took place in the shopping mall’s vast parking lot prior the pesky masses filling up the parking spaces.

With a high temp of 78.8F, the weather was perfect for her run as well as my escort ride. When the sun did rise, clouds blocked the sun from shining in our eyes when we were heading east.  Perfect!

On the way home from the mall, we felt a very slight misty-type sprinkle coming down from the fast moving grey clouds. The cooling mist felt especially good to my wife. I looked at the cooling mist as a good reason to totally wipe down my road bike after arriving home, which is exactly what I did.

Fabulous morning with a fabulous lady!

HALF METRIC CENTURY BIKE RIDE

Out-and-back half metric-century bike ride with Rey, Gary and Sandy.

After cruising around the mall for six miles warming up my leg joints, I joined my three amigos for a talk-while-you-ride, leisure bike-ride to the coffee shoppe and back. Our stay at the coffee shoppe was shortened because the local weather people hinted that rain would be falling on our heads any time after 10:30 AM. It’s now 11:30 AM and it hasn’t rained a drop.

On the way back to the barn, Sandy and I became separated from Rey and Gary because of traffic - and simply because we didn’t feel like pedaling our bikes any faster. Too much to talk about and no reason to rush. We never did spot a rose to sniff, however.

As a side note, I feel wonderful after eating only plant-based food for the past week. My wife and I are learning that there are countless delicious, nourishing no-meat and no-dairy meals to be eaten and enjoyed. More than we could have imagined prior to making this healthy move.

WINDY BIKE RIDE

After riding around the shopping mall for nearly six miles at a pace well below 10 mph, I hooked up with Gary, George, Sandy, Doug, Christina and Rossana for a semi-fast, advanced ride through four different cities.

The wind coming in from the ENE at 19 mph, with gust up to 25 mph, was a real speed deterrent. My legs were toast at the end of this morning’s ride.

Everyone have a wonderful Wednesday!

FUN BUT HECTIC BIKE RIDE

After cruising around the shopping mall for five miles at a nine minute per-mile-pace, I then met up with Rey, Ed, George and Sandy at our meet-up place.

We then left the mall area, merging into all the morning traffic along Hiatus Road, a road that I detest riding on.

After surviving Hiatus Road, we had somewhat of a breather while riding through the residential areas of Cooper City.

It was then onto busy Griffin Road, then the horse trail, then the ranch area, and then finally over the 6% gradient bridge that crosses over noisy Interstate 75.

I then maneuvered my bike through a crowded parking lot that stands host to many idle kamikaze motorists.

Arrived Einstein’s Bagel and Coffee Shoppe in one piece.

Reverse the above and I’m home in safe harbor, thanking my Maker for my safe return.

Hollywood Beach Boardwalk Ride

With my bike‘s tail light and head light blinking, I happily rode alongside my wife while she ran and walked 11 miles.

She began her training run/walk at 5:35 this morning, starting out in a large parking lot owned by a grocery store chain 1.2 miles from the beach. From there, we crossed the inland waterway onto Hollywood Beach’s famed boardwalk. We had to cross over two bridges on the way to the beach and then back to the grocery store parking lot, hence the elevation gain of 174 feet.

At or around mile seven, we found ourselves in the middle of a pack of runners and walkers that were participating in a local 5K. Janet was going the same pace as the mid-pack people, so we stayed with them until the turn around point on cat alley. Cat alley is where numerous feral cats hang out.

Although this was a very slow ride for me, I thoroughly enjoyed riding along the scenic boardwalk while listening to the waves from the Atlantic Ocean lap the shoreline. I also love keeping my wife company while she does her running and walking.

In summary, this was a beautiful morning in our tropical paradise.

TEAM MEMORIAL BIKE RIDE

Nice, relaxed bike ride in the lanes of Weston, Florida with my wife.

After meeting up with Team Memorial in Weston Regional Park, my wife and I took up the rear behind three different pace lines. Not knowing some of the riders and their cycling habits, we felt like it would be much safer if we held onto the rear of the pelotons. Unsure if my wife could even keep up with the others, no matter the speed, we chose to lag far behind even the slowest group.

After riding 14+ miles by ourselves, we met up with the others at Publix Market on Glades just south of State Road 84. We probably had at least 35 to 40 bikers congregated in front of the chain grocery store. It was an awesome sight.

After chatting for a while at Publix, my wife and I headed out on our own for another 12 miles, arriving back in the regional park in plenty of time to drive home, make and eat breakfast, and then tune in to our favorite sports channel to watch the Miami Hurricane football team play Kansas State. Our Hurricanes are losing!

So far it’s been a wonderful day in paradise despite our football team not doing well.

PARK TO PARK RIDE

Not counting my five-mile warm-up around the shopping mall and my two-mile cool-down in the county park, and only counting the miles that I rode with Sandy and George, my overall pace would have been 15.8 mph. Tally up all the miles and my pace was 13.9 mph.

But should of, could of doesn’t count, so I’ll take my 13.9 mph overall pace and feel proud that I can even do that. Most dudes my age (71) can’t even swing their legs over the saddle to saddle up.

After leaving the meet-up spot with Sandy and George, we caught up with Rey, Gary and Ed in a matter of minutes. They had left the barn area a few minutes earlier.

After riding together for a few minutes in a group of six, George, Sandy and I decided to take a longer route to the coffee shop. The route may have been longer, but we beat the other gentlemen to the coffee shop by at least five minutes. Ain’t we something!

After coffee, the six of us split up again, with Sandy, George and I again taking a much longer route back to the barn, and I’m sure at a much faster pace. I had to ask the boys to slow her down a tad or two so that I could keep up. They graciously worked with me by keeping the pace between 16-18 mph whenever we were not stopping or slowing for traffic, and most of that was against a constant 10 mph wind coming from the south.

Once we got to the end of Flamingo Road, I turned right into the county park while they turned left onto Johnson Street. I wanted to cool down for a couple miles and the park seemed like the perfect spot for a cool-down.

When I arrived home, fresh banana bread, strawberry yogurt and a large glass of almond milk with Ovaltine greeted me on the kitchen counter.

My two cats greeted me as well, meowing for fresh food.

GOOFY WALK-TRAINING IN NEIGHBORHOOD

As soon as the sun rose at 7:04 AM, I was enthusiastically out the door ready for an early morning walk around our bustling neighborhood.

After first strolling to our community mail box and then inserting a Netflix video (“First Dog”) in one of the outgoing mail slots, and then connecting with the tracking satellites for the benefit of my Garmin 110, I was on my way with a wide smile on my still ascetically sleepy face.

Call me Goofy, but I wanted to pick up the pace somewhat during today’s walk. Not too fast, just fast enough to insure me that I am still capable of entering and finishing several 5K’s and half marathons within the allotted time frames. I’m no longer allowed to run, so fast walking must suffice.

Picking up my walk pace even faster will not be an issue, but I’m still in the preservation mode of not wanting to stress out a knee that has been diagnosed as having a slightly torn ACL and arthritis.

This morning was one of those periods of times when I was especially grateful for the beautiful earth that has been provided for our usage. Perhaps I simply woke this morning in a thankful mood, or maybe I was really into all the beautiful tropical flowers and foliage that enriches my neighborhood. For whatever reason or reasons, my gratitude, I believe, showed on my beaming face.

I am pleased to say that everyone that I passed during this morning’s walk responded in a positive manner to my customary “Good morning, how are you?” greeting.

“Smile and the whole world will smile with you.” I sure wish that were true, don’t you?

Today it worked!

TWO RIDES IN ONE

This morning's half metric+ should be categorized as two rides in one.

The first ride was to the coffee shop with Ed, Gary and Rossana at a snail’s pace because of the rain and slick roads. We actually ducked underneath cover at a local grocery store for 15 to 20 minutes.

From the coffee shop back to the barn, or the second ride, I rode with Sandy, Tom, Rossana, Ron, Doug, New Guy and Christina at a pace that was considerably faster than ride number one. No rain, just lots of wind.

On the second ride, I remained in (heart rate) zone 4 for 30 minutes and zone 5 for 30 minutes, all because of a relentless headwind coming in from the south. Sandy and Rossana did all of the pulling while I positioned myself relatively comfortably in the rear or in the middle of the pace line.

Near the end of the ride, I hollered over to Sandy asking “How is it possible that a skinny little lady like Rossana can kick my butt?” He reminded me that she is 30 to 35 years younger than us.

Yeah, I suppose that does have something to do with it…

HIKE ALONG THE LAKE

After sleeping in until 7 AM this morning, I jumped out of bed, fed the cats and tropical fish, scooped the litter box, and then headed out for a pleasant walk along the lake, ducking into the gym at the halfway point for a shortened weight-machine session. I believe I spent more time chatting with an old friend than I did working out on the machines. Hey, how else are we going to solve the world’s problems?

Twice while walking on the sidewalk along the lake, I stopped and swept off broken glass from the sidewalk. We have a bunch of wankers in this town that evidently find it a thrill to throw glass bottles out of their car windows onto the sidewalks and streets. The real thrill, I suppose, is when they hear the breaking of the glass when the bottles hit the hard surfaces. I’d like to break the bottles over their empty heads!

Anyway, it was a pleasant hike along the tropical lake in ideal weather conditions. 84 degrees, mostly sunny with a slight breeze from the east (ocean) - I’ll take it!

2012 Tour of Sebring Half Metric Century

Even though there were more hills per mile during this half metric century than yesterday’s full metric, the degree of difficulty seemed much less because of the pleasant temperatures. My low heart rate was definitely an indicator of a much easier ride.

After completing her fist metric century the day before, my remarkable wife was somewhat apprehensive regarding this ride because of the hills. But when we started out at 7 in the morning and she felt the coolness of the morning, she became energized to the point of picking up her speed during most of the ride. We also rode with two of our local friends, stopping occasionally for short water/Gatorade breaks. Riding with others really helps on long rides.

After completing both rides, and after showering and then checking out of our motel, we placed our bikes into our SUV and then headed home, satisfied that we did our very best on both hilly routes.

Motel reservations are already made for next year’s Tour of Sebring.

2012 Tour of Sebring Metric Century

With an average temperature of 89.7 and a maximum temperature of 105.8 in the sun, this was without a doubt the hottest metric century that I have ever completed. It wasn’t the most difficult, just the hottest.

The next day’s ride, a half metric, the temps were nowhere near those highs. Yet, even though we rode faster during the half than the full, plus there were more hills per mile, my heart rate was considerably lower.

With this being my wife’s first metric century and the farthest distance that she has ever ridden by nearly 30 miles, I chose to stay with her during the entire ride – pulling 100% of the time. Pulling, however, doesn’t get anyone over hills, and it certainly matters little who is pulling when you’re only going 12 to 14 mph.

Bottom line, even though I took the lead, I credit my wife for enduring the excruciating heat and rolling hills, not to mention the extreme distance. We have zero hills where we train in South Florida, only small bridges and community speed bumps.
